There is a fairly strong correlation between BMI and body fatness though that correlation strength varies by certain characteristics.
Some variations include the following:
- At the same BMI, women tend to have more body fat than men. On average older individuals tend to have more body fat than younger adults.
- Those who are highly active may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness.
Researchers have found that having increased physical fitness helps to negate adverse effects of high body fatness.
Considering BMI number cannot distinguish between body fat weight and muscle weight, utilizing more direct measurements of body composition is recommended for athletes and consistently active individuals.
